This October planting checklist is for Pacific Northwest gardeners who:

  • Want to plant garlic this fall and aren't sure when or how

  • Wonder if anything is still worth planting as the garden winds down

  • Want to keep eating greens from the garden into winter

  • Want to protect their soil through the rainy season instead of leaving beds bare

  • Want the real Seattle timing and not the generic advice written for California or the East Coast

  • Have raised beds, containers, or a small backyard in the greater Seattle area

It's especially helpful because October planting looks different from the rest of the year. Most seeds sown now won't grow enough before winter, so the work shifts to cloves, bulbs, and starts: garlic, shallots, fava beans, and hardy greens that root in fall and reward you in spring and summer. It's also the month to bring in the last of the harvest before frost and put your beds to bed properly, so they're ready to go next spring.

Covers: garlic, shallots, overwintering onion sets, fava beans, kale, chard, Asian greens, lettuce starts, corn salad, winter squash, pumpkins, tomatoes, and cover crops, with specific timing for Zone 8b/9a, what's too late to sow, and how to get your beds through the winter rains.

This checklist covers what to plant. When you're ready to figure out how much, my PNW Harvest Yield Planner works out how many of each crop your household actually needs. You'll find it at palatinogardenadventures.com/inner-circle.
