This September planting checklist is for Pacific Northwest gardeners who:

  • Aren't sure what's still worth planting as the season winds down (more than you'd think)

  • Want fresh greens through fall and even into winter

  • Want to set their soil up for an easier spring instead of leaving beds bare

  • Want the real Seattle timing and not the generic advice written for California or the East Coast

  • Have raised beds, containers, or a small backyard in the greater Seattle area

It's especially helpful because September is a turning point. The light is fading and growth is slowing, so timing matters more than any other month. There's still a window to sow fall greens and get overwintering crops and garlic in the ground, but you have to move in the first half of the month. And the beds you're done with need attention too, so they're ready to go next spring.

Covers: arugula, lettuce, spinach, radishes, turnips, Asian greens, mustard, kale, corn salad, winter lettuce, garlic, shallots, overwintering onions, and cover crops - with specific timing for Zone 8b/9a, what to plant for overwintering, and how to protect your soil before the rains return.

This checklist covers what to plant. When you're ready to figure out how much, my PNW Harvest Yield Planner works out how many of each crop your household actually needs. You'll find it at palatinogardenadventures.com/inner-circle.
